The ground for the residence permit is managing your own Hungarian company (vendég-önfoglalkoztatás célú tartózkodási engedély). This is not “buying” a status: the immigration authority assesses whether the company’s activity is real and whether your personal presence in Hungary is needed for it.

What the immigration authority checks

Conditions under Act XC of 2023 and the guidance of OIF (Országos Idegenrendészeti Főigazgatóság).

An operating company

A Hungarian Kft. (or another commercial form) where you are the director (vezető tisztségviselő). No tax debts, liquidation or enforcement proceedings.

Justification of the activity

Either the company has employed at least 5 Hungarian/EEA staff for at least 6 months, or a detailed business plan shows that your presence is necessary and the company can sustain itself.

Means of subsistence

Proof of legal income or savings for living costs, housing, travel and healthcare — statements, income certificates.

Housing in Hungary

A lease, a right of use or ownership. A temporary booking is also accepted for the application.

Health insurance

Full coverage: Hungarian insurance (TAJ), an international agreement or sufficient funds.

Passport and presence

The passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the permit. For renewal — at least 90 days in Hungary out of every 180.

All prices are + VAT 27%. Not included: company share capital (from HUF 3 million), government fees, notary fees and certified translations, health insurance, rent. The bank decides on opening an account; the immigration authority decides on the residence permit.

Good to know in advance

The status is temporary: 1 year + renewal up to 2 years, up to 3 years in total. After that you can submit a new application.
On its own it does not give the right to a national permanent residence card. If permanent residence is your goal, we will discuss other grounds.
Family members can get residence permits through reunification only one year after the director’s permit is issued.
You cannot do hands-on work on this ground — only manage the company.

Citizens of Russia, Belarus and other countries

Citizens of visa-required countries submit their first application at a Hungarian consulate abroad. Banks carry out enhanced checks on clients from Russia and Belarus: this can take longer and the decision rests with the bank. At the consultation we honestly assess your case before you pay.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to live in Hungary permanently?

No, but for renewal you must be in Hungary for at least 90 days in every 180. The company must also have real activity.

How long does the process take?

Company registration takes about a week. The immigration authority processes the application in 21 days, but pauses for additional document requests are not included. Opening the account and the consulate appointment usually take the most time. Realistically, plan for several months.

Can I buy an apartment and get a residence permit?

Buying property on its own does not give a residence permit. There is a separate programme for investments — the guest investor programme (Golden Visa).

Can there be two directors?

Yes. Each director needs their own ground, and a work permit is often arranged for the second director.

Can I use an existing company?

Yes, if it has no debts, is not in liquidation and its activity can be proven. We will check this before applying.

What happens after three years?

You can submit a new application on the same ground, no later than 40 days before the permit expires. If you need permanent status, we will go through other options at the consultation.
